The Levites are Organized
for Service
1 Chron. 23:1-32
"They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord. They were to do the same in the evening..." (30)
"And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their relatives the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the Lord." (32)
David was now quite old and full of years. But instead of
being sentimental, he thought about the future of Israel. He was especially
concerned about the spiritual life of the nation. David had already provided
materials for the physical temple. Now he also reorganized the Levites and made
an environment for Israel’s life of worship.
First, David reorganized the Levites (1-27). Psalm 100 says,
“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come
before him with joyful songs.” Worship is what we as God’s people were created
for. We were made to worship God. Israel was God’s chosen people. He called
them first to be his people and to worship Him as the LORD. David was deeply
concerned about the spiritual heartbeat of Israel. So his first concern was the
temple and the order of worship in the temple. The temple is the place of
worship. David organized the Levites to provide for the service of the temple
of the LORD. They were divided into temple workers, officials and judges,
gatekeepers and musicians. David lowered the age of service to twenty.
We are called to worship the LORD. Whatever we do in the
church, we should do so in the spirit of worship. Our prayers, our singing,
message delivery and all work we do are an extension of our worship. We should
do all things unto the LORD. We are serving the Lord, not men. Also, we should
do everything with joy. Late at night, I receive a phone call. Jack asked me to
prepare the message for him because he was sick. At first, I was burdened but then
I could thank God. I realized that I should be ready to serve at a moment’s
call because God called me to be a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
Second, the duty of the Levites (28-32). The Levites were to
assist the descendants of Aaron in the service of Gods’ house. This meant
taking care of the temple rooms, purifying sacred objects, and making an
environment for worship. In the morning and evening, Levites were to stand and
thank and praise the LORD (30). Here, we can see what should be the natural rhythm
of each day. We should begin and end each day with thanksgiving and praise. Hallelujah!
This most joyful duty is an important responsibility for God’s people in all
generations.
As prayer servants, we begin the day by thanking and
praising the LORD and we offer intercessory prayers for our community of faith,
world mission, sick coworkers and for loved ones. We also pray for the pioneering
work of campus mission all across the world. This is a great privilege and
honor. May God bless our prayers and worship continually to be as a fragrant
offering to the LORD that is acceptable through his Son Jesus Christ.
Father, praise you for your mercy in Jesus. Thank you for
all the servants in our church. Thank you for granting us faithful messengers
through P. Ron and other servants. Thank you for our praise team and for all
the prayer servants who gather in the morning. Lord, we offer ourselves for
service and worship. May your name be glorified among us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
